Alternative Energy

Shanti Griha has been promoting appropriate rural technologies effective in meeting the basic needs of the rural communities and improving their life support system. We started the program in 2003 with solar powered water pumps and in 2005 expanded to solar lights. Shanti Griha has installed the solar powered water pumping systems in five villages of Dhading. At present, Shanti Griha, in partnership with the Solar Electric Company, is experimenting with Puxin Bio Gas Plant in the village of Gyaja; 14 plants are being installed.

In Nepal, those who do not have access to electricity generally rely on kerosene wick lamps. This form of lighting is neither cost effective nor is it environment friendly. Fumes from the tuki (kerosene lamp) affect the eyes and lungs, contribute to global warming due to release of greenhouse gas, the quality of light is inferior and there is a high risk of accidental fire hazards. Keeping this in mind we provided three sets of solar powered electric lamps in the village of Saichhap for 24 families. Before, the villagers purchased 1.5 to 3 liters of kerosene every month. A fully charged set works continuously for eight hours.
